5 Simple Steps to Customizing your Resume
5 Simple Steps to Customizing your Resume 5 Simple Steps to Customizing your Resume 5 Simple Steps to Customizing Your Resume for Each Job Your resume is your resume, correct? You may believe that once you've altered and changed your resume to get the most ideal completed item, you're finished. Simply include a clever introductory letter and boat it out to every one of those planned occupations and hang tight for the meeting solicitations to begin coming in. In any case, at that point they don't. Your resume is strong. What's the issue? While your resume might be insightfully assembled, it doesn't address any one explicit employment. Consider what number of candidates each activity jumps every day. How does your resume stand apart from the group? It might appear to be a great deal of additional work, however taking the time and exertion to alter your resume for each activity that you apply for is definitely justified even despite your time and exertion. [TWEET] Here's 5 basic strides to altering a resume and making it leap out of the slush heap for your fantasy work. 1. Try not to lie. How about we set up this immediately. Tweaking a resume for an occupation isn't equivalent to decorating your certifications. On the off chance that the activity posting says they're searching for an individual with master level abilities in Microsoft Photoshop and you don't generally utilize that program, don't add it to your resume. As a general rule, lying or decorating your resume in such a way prompts catastrophe. Consider it. On the off chance that you get employed dependent on abilities you don't really need to perform assignments you most likely don't have the foggiest idea how to do, how could that be going to work out? Rather, redoing your resume is about truly taking a gander at the particular employment you need and accentuating your aptitudes that best fit what they're searching for in a candidate and making light of those things that may not be as applicable. Tip: Think of redoing a resume as sprucing up your resume for a meeting. You need to wear the correct garments that show you fit with the organization, not a hairpiece since you think they need a redhead. 2. Advance for catchphrases. It might be less regular than it was a couple of years back, however numerous organizations despite everything use candidate following frameworks (ATS) to examine resumes for watchwords. This framework is a path for organizations to filter out the huge amount of candidates by setting off specific watchwords or characteristics they're searching for in their next recruit. The drawback to this training is that phenomenal up-and-comers can get missed on the grounds that they utilized marginally unique wording. How would you abstain from being removed when you're an extraordinary fit for the activity? Simple. Take a gander at the particular employment posting that interested you in any case. Notice the verbiage they use all through. At that point, go over your resume and see where you might have the option to tailor your resume to embed a couple of those catchphrases into your activity history. For example, if a Public Relations work is searching for individuals with imaginative thoughts for promoting and media relations and your resume discusses the manner in which you made another framework for coordinating online networking with existing advertising endeavors, you have a simple trade. Take out another and put in an inventive. Regardless of whether the recruiting organization doesn't utilize an ATS to screen resumes, they'll be fixed on those watchwords that they publicized in the activity posting. Tip: Don't go over the edge. On the off chance that your resume seems as though a reflected reaction to the activity posting, it's excessively self-evident. You're attempting to feature your best capabilities. An excessive number of matches and they'll believe you're decorating. 3. Update that goal articulation. The target articulation is a relic of days gone by. Rather, trade it for an expert synopsis that isn't about what you need in your profession, however rather about what you can bring to the activity. It's shrewd to refresh this part for each activity in light of the fact that at times, it might be the main thing they read. In the event that you can't catch their enthusiasm for your expert rundown, they may not waste time with the remainder of your resume. It resembles perusing the back front of a book to check whether you'd like it. Once more, you would prefer not to lie and state you're searching for profession that will permit you to venture to the far corners of the planet in the event that you truly would want to remain nearby to home. That prompts a terrible fit not far off. Consider what it was in their activity posting that charmed you the most. Is it the activity title or the possibility for headway? Be sensible about how this activity would accommodate your profession objectives and afterward feature those objectives in your recently modified worth proclamation. Tip: Make sure that your expert outline talks about objectives past simply the current position. Most managers need to see up-and-comers that have a lifelong way at the top of the priority list. 4. Clean up your resume. In the event that your general goal is to feature the vocation moves and achievements on your resume that best fit the position you are applying for, it bodes well to gather up a portion of the messiness right? Take out or limit more established employments that may have next to zero importance for the ideal position. Indeed, even on later employments, keep the parts you need them to see and trim away probably the rest. You need your resume honestly and brief and tweaked perfectly for the employing administrator who sees it. That implies that gathering up the non-significant highlights (that might be legitimate for your next request for employment) need to make room so your fundamental achievements can truly sparkle. Tip: Keep your unique resume put away and obviously stamped some place safe. You would prefer not to lose important data during this procedure. Consider it your beginning canvas. 5. Go past the set of working responsibilities. When you've caught the set of working responsibilities and the verbiage they like to utilize, head to the organization site to figure out the organization in general. Are there particular sorts of tasks they center around more than others? Do they vigorously bolster any causes or neighborhood network occasions? Search for reasons why you may be a solid match with this organization past the expected set of responsibilities and work it into your resume if conceivable. Once more, don't claim to grasp a foundation since they do. That is not cool. Yet, on the off chance that they support Breast Cancer Awareness occasions and you've taken part in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day Breast Cancer Walk, include that in your resume. In the event that you see that they've worked intimately with nearby children's games and you've trained or chipped in, get it in there. Not exclusively could this assistance your tweaked continue ascend to the head of the heap, it's incredible discussion grub for that meet. Tip: Remember, at times there are reasons for what reason you'd be a solid match for an organization and position that have nothing to do with your past work understanding. Chipping in, child rearing, and leisure activities make significant encounters. Why experience the entirety of this work when you as of now have a resume? You don't need to in the event that you would prefer not to. In case you're glad tossing one resume at 20 distinct employments, that is fine. Yet, by securing three or four positions that you truly need and redoing your resume for every one, you expand your odds of arriving in any event a meeting. At long last, it's everything about an incredible mix of you, your capacities, an extraordinary position, and an organization that you'll appreciate working for consistently. That merits some additional exertion. Need to perceive how your resume piles up? Evaluate our free investigate today!

Managers who are able to provide clear direction, be sure that their group is ready to operate as a cohesive staff, and keep away from the most typical and dear missteps and oversights are far more more likely to make the leap from merely managing their staff to leading their engineering team to larger success. Finding methods to facilitate communication between an engineering team and different departments and addressing or eliminating any obstacles or limitations that poor communication may be creating is usually step one in offering a bunch, staff or department with effective management. Itâs also important that you just talk clearly along with your group. Be capable of perceive precisely what they want, even if they canât always specific it clearly. Recognize what the basis issue is, and be prepared to behave on it. Also, learn the way finest to work with them to be able to ensure that you're getting the work from them you need while ensuring they are happy with their compensation. Consider partaking in a persuasion coaching program to learn how finest to barter with them if essential. Micromanaging can be particularly problematic in terms of engineering initiatives where managers is probably not conversant in the technical features of the workflow course of. Healthy Body
HEALTHY BODY/HEALTHY MIND Last week, wrapped in some whining and ranting and raving, had been embedded some of these pleasant little devils, New Years Resolutions. Believe me, Iâm not going over all that doom and gloom and impotent rage stuff once more. On my to do list for at present was the item: > FAH weblog submit (something POSITIVE!) The least I can do is follow my very own instructions. So right here we're, firmly ensconced in 2012, a yr Iâve determined will be better than the last. So what have I carried out about that? Well, lots of stuff actually. In the immortal phrases of Paula Abdul, âI work my ASS OFF, Jeff!â (That was her swearing, not me.) But at present Iâd like to talk about that evil decision about being more wholesome, which last week I outed as fats particular person slang for âshed weight.â When youâre, like me, somewhere round a hundred kilos overweight, itâs very tough to get considerably more healthy with out shedding weight. So despite the fact that my aim is not me rely to shed pounds, but to really feel better and reside longer, I canât have one without the other. Well, so, then, good for me, proper? But what the heck (see, thatâs me not swearing) does this need to do with writing fantasy and science fiction, which is what this blog is actually alleged to be about? Time and again, numerous folks have repeated some variation of: A healthy body and a wholesome mind go hand in hand. I think that is solely partially true. Iâve been working with Jay Lake on our Fathomless Abyss project while on the same time checking in on his regular posts about his continuing battle with most cancers. Jayâs not giving in, however proper now, his physique isn't healthy. Though heâs been very open about having some bad days, some days when much as heâd like, he merely canât work, Jay has been writing all alongside, and if his story for Tales From The Fathomless Abyss is any indication, the most cancers in his body has not affected his creativityâ"hi s thoughtsâ"at all. Jay is one example of a wholesome mind in an unhealthy physique. And right here I am, an old, fat, bald man, with even fewer excuses. I donât have most cancers, or some other critical illness. Right now I donât even have any nuisance illnesses. So this morning, shed of all excuses, the children back in class and my spouse again at work, I had no alternative but to stare that New Years Resolution right within the face. I canât not even start, after all, so I dusted off that Yoga for Beginners DVD I purchased so many years ago I canât even bear in mind, and actually did yoga. People who really, yâknow, do yoga, and individuals who like YouTube and Americaâs Funniest Home Videos, would absolutely have discovered this a sight to behold. But I donât care. I was doing it. Then I received on the train bike, and whereas reading the first few chapters of Robert Silverbergâs Majipoor Chronicles, did my thirty minutes of cardio. Day one, complete. On that r ating anyway. Has it made me a greater author? Too early to tell, but I actually have gone by way of healthier intervals in my life and I know it will. Exercise offers me vitality. I sleep much less and get better sleep whereas I am sleeping. I deal with stress higherâ"means higher, actually. And these two issues alone help me write extra, and the extra I write, the higher at it I getâ"at least incrementally. For the recommendation a part of this publish I would say, do the identical. Donât harm your self. Believe your physician and other well being professionals over me in all issues, but do one thing. Hate yoga and/or train bikes? Do something else, then, however do one thing. One of the things I would caution you to do is to disregard anyone who tries to inform you what your âobjective weightâ ought to be. Mine is XXL. When I fit into the XXL wardrobe thatâs been waiting for me to get again all the way down to that dimension for the final six years or so, Iâm there. I donât give the south end of a northbound rat what the scale tells me then or now. Equally ignore any recommendation as to what your âregularâ weight is. They keep shifting these issues, truly: goal and regular and best. Now plainly ânormalâ is what twenty years in the past was considered âworld-class athlete.â If youâre spending more than two hours a day, 5 days per week exercising, I assume youâre pushing it. If you want to train for a marathon or triathlon becuase you suppose itâll be enjoyable to take part in these occasions, go forward. But when you arenât a professional athlete, if youâre a author, or pretty much anything else, you donât need to be in the same bodily condition as an Olympic athlete. If youâre older than, say, 25, youâre probably never going to be irrespective of how hard you hit the health club. If, like me, your genes tell your body to store fat more so than other individuals, this might be very true. If youâre exercising to th e purpose of pain or exhaustion, back off. If youâre exercising as an alternative of writing, train much less and write more. But writing fiction is a protracted recreation. You will not be published in your teenagers. You may have a number of ups and downs in your profession. Youâll have all types of actual life challenges that intrude with how many words you'll be able to write at present, let alone over the course of the subsequent year, however when youâre lifeless of a heart attack on the age of forty five, youâve cheated yourself and your readers out of maybe that many extra yearsâ price of nice stories. Iâm not doing all this so I may be mistaken for a taller Brad Pitt. Iâm doing this so I can live to tell the tale. Literally. â"Philip Athans About Philip Athans Dear Mr. Athans: While I donât fake to let you know how you should do issues, here are a couple of simple issues that helped me a lot when my weight was higher than it ought toâve been. Besides exercising often, it might be a good suggestion to attempt to slightly change what you eat, so you steadily develop healthy consuming habits. For instance, when you wish to drink milk, change it to milk with less fats and, when you get used to that, switch it to fats free milk. In other issues, possibly boiled or barbecued meat instead of fried? Another factor was drastically decreasing my consumption of alcohol, answerable for an excellent part of my over weight. Finally, with regard to excercise, I would suggest you do something in a group. Perhaps yoga, as you stated: itâs all the time higher when there are different people struggling in the identical course that you're. Maybe not everybody has the same health problems that you've got, but typically speaking, everyone involved in a gr oup exercise of that kind may have the objective of improving themselves, in one way or one other, and so everyone should be supportive with you: it at all times restores religion in humanity when a person thatâs past his 20âs starts caring about his well being and really doing one thing about it. I hope you'll be able to fulfill your want for a greater well being this 12 months, mister Athans. Sincerely Juan Dougnac Fill in your particulars under or click an icon to log in:

The Hidden Benefits Of An Informational Interview
The Hidden Benefits of an Informational Interview Remember when getting a job meant circling a want advert in the newspaper after which displaying up to stated job with resume in hand? Have you tried to acquire momentary employment these days? Gone are the times when you would present up at an agency at 9 am and be working by 10 am. Honestly, if youâre studying this, youâre most likely too younger to recollect these days, but they did exist⦠really! When Richard Nelson Bolles wrote What Color is Your Parachute? and introduced the idea of the informational interview, I donât assume any of us foresaw âtrying on jobs to see in the event that they match being a staple within the means of acquiring a brand new job. Yet, here we're. The more well-identified attributes of an informational interview are the tidbits of data you get that assist you figure out if the grass really is greener on the opposite aspect. Most individuals only think of using an informational interview as a last resort or once theyâre attempting to alter ca reers, primarily as a result of you can get hold of plenty of info you couldât get on an everyday interview. But you can also get a lot extra from them. Why You Want That Information to Begin With Letâs check out that grass thatâs supposedly greener for a minute. If you might be in advertising at Google, itâs most likely a good suggestion to speak to a couple individuals at Yahoo! or Facebook before deciding to make a transfer. Why? Well, whenever you change jobs, you become the low man on the totem pole and you have to show yourself to an entire new set of individuals. Why do this if youâre not even sure this new company would be the proper surroundings for you? And with the changing financial system, âfinal in, first outâ is at all times in the back of your thoughts. When making a profession change, an informational interview helps you understand if you really need that extra certification or training you assume you need. For women, this step is particularly helpful as a result of we now have a foul habit of thinking we receivedât be prepared till we take another class, get one more certification or earn that pesky superior diploma weâve been considering. By speaking with somebody already within the industry, you can figure out if youâre on observe or throwing up unnecessary roadblocks. While you might not need an advanced diploma, you may discover out youâre lacking a specific skill that might be helpful to you. Understanding the place you could have a couple of deficiencies will help you as you put together in your new profession or look to realize job progress and advancement in your current group. If leadership expertise are critical to development however you havenât had the chance to guide a project or a staff, now can be the time to step up. An informational interview may also help you determine if there is a barrier to entry in a new career that you didnât know existed. For example, when youâre a lawyer who decides to switch from civil litigation to intellectual property regulation, the odds of that happening are slim as a result of you'll often must have some kind of technical diploma and expertise in that particular kind of legislation. Just being a lawyer isnât enough. Same thing with becoming a college principal â" you might think all you have to do is have experience as a instructor combined with some school administration experience, not realizing that the majority college principals have a doctorate degree. Some positions require a sure number of years or tenure within an trade and no matter how advanced your degree is, you wonât reduce it with out that particular on-the-job experience. These are all great issues to know prior to making the decision to alter careers. The Less Obvious (But Very Real) Benefits While the above benefits of an informational interview are good to know, what is really helpful are some of the lesser-identified attributes. Want to know if your colleague really is making six figures in her new job? Canât figure out how she obtained that place? Or perhaps sheâs always mentioning the good recommendation she obtained from someone in the business and you simply canât determine how she did it. The answer to all three could also be within the informational interviews she performed. With regard to true wage, Glassdoor.com is a good device for acquiring information about salaries within an organization, however if youâre on an informational interview, the person youâre interviewing can provide you with perception that mayât be discovered elsewhere. You simply need to ask the proper question and then hearken to what they say, in addition to to what they donât say. (Click here to tweet this thought.) You may ask, âI have heard that salaries for X place at yo ur competitor are slightly greater than here. Have you discovered that to be true?â You could additionally ask, âItâs my understanding that salaries here are slightly under the business standard as a result of this is such an excellent company to work for. In your opinion, is that accurate?â If you do this accurately and ask all the right questions, you might discover that you and the person youâre interviewing are building great rapport. If that happens, they could determine to tell you of a job opening they know of which hasnât been advertised but. They may ask if youâre fascinated and offer to forward your resume on to the appropriate get together. Everyone secretly hopes for this opportunity, but it doesnât always occur and you should by no means push for it. However, when it does, jump on it. Another good thing about the informational interview is your opportunity to acquire a mentor. If you build good rapport and discover your target to be a credible and helpfu l person, you can ask if they'd be okay with you often checking in with them for advice as you advance in your career. If they already took the time to spend minutes meeting with you, there is a good chance they will be prepared to do it on a more frequent foundation. Where Did My Resume Go Uncovering The Mystery
Where Did My Resume Go Uncovering The Mystery Where Does Your Resume Go? Where Did My Resume Go Uncovering The Mystery Ronnie Ann is an authoritative expert spend significant time in business process improvement and working environment instructing who can be gotten notification from on her own blog, Work Coach Caf. She has held numerous employments of different sorts in people in general, private, non-benefit, and scholastic segments. Aside from observing downright terrible TV, eating pizza, and making the most of her dearest Brooklyn her preferred interest is helping individuals comprehend the oft-vague universe of work. One of the benefits of having my own blog is perusing what genuine employment searchers state about the maddeningly puzzling pursuit of employment process. What appears to be so clear to those of us who choose who gets the offer is a wellspring of secret and disappointment for people planning to land that position. What's more, on the off chance that you make sense of the principles for one organization, theres no assurance those standards apply somewhere else. Things being what they are, what befalls your resume after you send it? At the point when you present your resume on the web A few organizations expect you to present an online application including your resume and potentially an introductory letter. These resumes might be gotten to immediately or significantly later by different regions of the organization. To permit online access, all resumes, including those submitted by means of snail mail and email, go into an accessible database. The precarious part about online resume frameworks is that despite the fact that your resume has been gotten electronically, somebody needs to get their hands on it to benefit you in any way. Furthermore, that takes an individual taking care of catchphrases into the framework so it can let out matches. Goodness great! you think. Ive endeavored to get quite a few catchphrases or key expressions into my resume. Indeed, that helps, yet you additionally need to trust the individual is gifted at concocting the correct watchwords. This isn't accurate all over the place. Ive worked in places where HR staff who think minimal about a vocation take control and pick words they need, leaving the office hoping to recruit somebody at their kindness. Resumes of completely qualified candidates may never escape the database. That is the reason whenever you get a live human to see your resume (through systems administration or some way or another getting it under the control of your possible chief), you're expanding your odds of getting to the subsequent stage. At the point when you send your resume by means of snail mail or email Except if youre sending it to somebody you know, anybody may get their hands on itall the more motivation to check cautiously for grammatical errors and appearance, and include an introductory letter or possibly a couple of words that give them motivation to figure you may be a match. In the long run, your resume gets to the assigned screener (potentially with a remark or two from the underlying screener), who gives your resume a speedy once-finished and places it into their Yes, No, or Maybe heap. Once more, things like appearance, grammatical mistakes, unexplained work holes, and the manner in which you do or dont plainly feature important qualities can have a colossal effect in grabbing their attention. For the Yes resumes (and some of the time a portion of the Maybes) the following stage might be a telephone meet or a require an in-person meet. In any case, they need to ensure you appear to be a possible fit for the activity and friends, particularly the organization culture (even more motivation to do your exploration). Your resume lives on after you're recruited Regardless of whether your resume prompts a meeting, its activity isnt done at this point. It will end up in the possession of questioners, so ensure you realize your resume truly well, and be set up to introduce your story in the best light, since they could be boring down about anything they see on that piece of paper. Your resume will likewise appear during ensuing meetings, and in the possession of any other person requested to offer a supposition. Furthermore, it will most likely be there as the organization settles on its last employing choice. From that point onward, it should go through Human Resources (its presumably been there at any rate once as of now), and, in the event that they need to make you an offer, they'll likely utilize it to lead a record verification. At last, in case you're recruited, your trusty old resume may sit in your organization document. In the event that there are any irregularities, (for example, an occupation you didn't have or an organization you never worked for), it can cause issues down the road for you sometime in the not so distant future. Be that as it may, it can likewise be taken a gander at during execution assessments, or to give your manager more knowledge into your aptitudes or new things you might be approached to do. Along these lines, dont think anything you may find out about the resume being dead or only a custom! While the facts demonstrate that systems administration is perhaps the most grounded partner and will assist you with handling an underlying meeting, your resume despite everything works for you. Regardless of whether you get help composing it or do it all alone, set aside the effort to make it the absolute best articulation of what your identity is!

Will Company-Wide Volunteering Work for You Will Company-Wide Volunteering Work for You As a selection representative you're continually searching for techniques that will assist you with improving your workers' working experience without adding to your primary concern. Furthermore, with regards to selecting and building dedication, unordinary benefits like paid chipping in are progressively mainstream, particularly among the desired Gen Y segment. Is it true that they are viewed as an advantage by workers? Are there any unmistakable business benefits? Here's a glance at three significant things to comprehend about organization giving patterns and whether they can assist you with making sense of on the off chance that they're directly for your organization. 1. Organization Giving Helps Attract and Identify Promising New Recruits There are two distinctive qualities that make the act of organization giving particularly significant to organizations hoping to enroll more youthful workers. PriceWaterhouseCoopers found that 88 percent of Millennials float towards organizations with set up chipping in programs or corporate social duty programs. Be that as it may, while assorted variety causes you stay serious in your industry, it can likewise prompt a progressively secluded or reluctant workspace essentially on the grounds that the main thing they share for all intents and purpose is a business. Broad chipping in gives a chance to your representatives to meet up and accomplish a shared objective that isn't identified with work capacities or history. You're giving a no-constrain zone to building shared conviction and figuring out how to function as a group. At the point when you support all inclusive chipping in days you're making another, common history for your various representatives. Representatives meet up outside of the typical business order and see that they can assemble something in like manner. 3. Organization Giving Won't Heal a Hurting Environment Only single word of caution: with the entirety of the positive development related with organization giving, don't imagine that organization giving is a panacea for an inexorably harmful work environment. On the off chance that you have difficult issues to work through, for example, high turnover or low resolve, organization giving projects will just exacerbate those sentiments of hatred and brokenness between what your representatives truly need and what you are eager to give them. You're in an ideal situation contributing assets to improve correspondence and resolve inside the working environment than offering elective volunteer chances. In case you're thinking about whether to incorporate organization giving as a major aspect of your organization's paid advantages, there's nobody right answer. In case you're hoping to enable a decent group to show signs of improvement or make normal roots among another group, at that point organization giving will receive efficiency benefits. However, it positively won't take care of any progressing issues in the working environment. By the day's end, the appropriate response is a lot of equivalent to applying some other new thoughts for your workplace: it's up to every HR expert to choose whether or not it's a solid match. When Social Networking Gets Very, Very Personal (in a good way)
When Social Networking Gets Very, Very Personal (in a good way) Social networking. Its a funny thing. How much is too much, what about digital dirt, and what about all of the private people out there? I dont have any answers, but I do have opinions. Today well take a detour from the normal issues so I can share something that has been unfolding over the last few weeks, and exemplifies how social, and personal, social networking can be. You may have heard of a blogger named Susan Reynolds. She was diagnosed with breast cancer this month and is having surgery today. She started a blog called Boobs on Ice, and talks about how she used a bag of frozen peas to, well, here it is in her own words: To keep bleeding down relieve pain Id need to keep things cool. Traditional ice packs are hard and heavy. As much as I try to be a good sport Im not into having a brick sitting on my chest. Enter a bag of frozen peas. I tucked it in my bra, took a picture, and was ready to tell the story later that night. That bag of peas added a touch of lightness to what could have been a sad and serious tale. I found out about it on Twitter. You should see whats going on today in Twitter everyone has peas as their avatar. I dont have the grapics skillz so I just borrowed one (I hope it wasnt from Lane Hartwell ;)). It really has been amazing to watch all of the people rally around Susan. what an amazing show of support. Twitter is green. TechCrunch wrote about it (that is a feat). Bloggers all over are writing about it. Dozens of people are giving up billable hours to support this cause, give moral support to Susan, and even donate to the Frozen Pea Fund. Going back to social networking, this is really what it should be about. People. And people helping people. Thank you to all who have proven that we are indeed not alone, there are many good people in this world, and the internet can be used for good! You can do a quick blog search in Google to see what comes up for Susan Reynolds, but here are some posts that really stood out in my mind (the titles are immensely powerful, and show what can really happen with social media): Peas Help WhyMommy give Peas a chance web friends can be real friends. Entrepreneurial Exam Reveals Improved Grade - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
Entrepreneurial Exam Reveals Improved Grade - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career It is said, âSummertime and the living is easyâ. We seem to enjoy more of what life has to offer when the warmer weather finally arrives. And my theory is, while we are in this more relaxed state, it proves to be the best time to fully examine our current entrepreneurial status. Challenge Yourself to Take the Entrepreneurial Exam Instruction: To get into the mood for doing this, begin on a high note and then delve into the more difficult questions. Once the more painful subjects are dealt with, return to the happier subject matter and how you might expand upon it. 1. Are you happy with your achievements? 2. Of which achievements are you most proud and derive the most joy? 3. Out of all of your business activities, which do you look forward to doing the most? 4. What does your spreadsheet recording revenue for each stream of income indicate in terms of the poorest performing activities; should these be discarded? 5. Which activities do you enjoy the least, and is it time to let go of these? 6. Is it possible to springboard your favorite activities into further products and services? 7. Do you have an idea that you never shared because it seems too far-fetched? Perhaps now is the time to discuss the idea with trusted others. Unlike a college exam that is over within a couple of hours and most likely never consider again, the answers to the questions may take the entire summer. It may even be agonizing to admit what has been bothering you deep down. But the self-reflection, after all, is also intended to find increased happiness within your business and find new routes to take that offer hope of increased joy. Summer is also a great time to do more reading in order to self-educate or to pay for help on topics for which you didnât have time earlier in the year. âBobâ is working in his field of education. But he recognized his desire to produce artsy film. Some laugh that itâs too late in life to attempt to do this. Bob already has a hefty student loan and cannot afford another. Bob does not have contacts in the film production field nor any experience, just the thought. On the other side of the coin, he may find a great hobby. It is possible people he meets along the way will take an interest and they might establish a side business. Beneath it all, one never knows until they try â" and isnât that what entrepreneurship is all about? This time of year is also a perfect time to reconnect with people you previously met. Even better, should you have an inner circle of other entrepreneurs whom you admire and trust, find a time to chat one on one or as a group. No one has all the answers so by being open to share troubling moments as well as new concepts you will bring about new thought to be seriously considered. âOne who refuses to give upâ may well become your personal brand. When you take the exam and time to answer properly, you will improve your grade and find the Smooth Sale! Branding A Very Short Introduction for Recruiters
Branding A Very Short Introduction for Recruiters Whether youre a recruiter, HR professional or owner of a business you know that the brand you represent is going to help you attract the right employees. Robert Jones is a strategist at Wolff Olins where he has helped build brands like Barclays, National Trust, Oxfam, Tesco, and Virgin. With a wealth of branding experience under his belt, Robert is the author of Branding: A Very Short Introduction which you can get hold of at good bookstores and online. Branding is the most powerful commercial and cultural force on the planet. Please explain. Commercial: I think theres a very strong argument that branding is the single, most powerful commercial force because brand represents a third of the total value of the stock market. So totally intangible stuff to do with brand, and I cant think of another thing in the business world that takes up as much of the value there is in the world as branding. Cultural: I think its the most powerful cultural force simply because its the most ubiquitous cultural force. Of course, religions are very important forces, political parties are important forces, but there are very few that reach pretty much every corner of the planet and affects virtually everybody. For instance, in the most remote parts of the world, youll still see the red of Coca-Cola, and you may also see the red of Manchester United. These things are just pervasive. How would you describe branding? It is a very complex thing, and everyone has a different definition. The important thing is that its not the same thing as logo, or a slogan, or a color. Its the bunch of ideas that a company, or a product, or a service stands for in the minds of people out in the world. So IKEA for example, the brand is not the IKEA logo, or the blue and yellow colors, or any of those things. Its this idea of accessible, affordable, Scandinavian design and its place in our lives. Thats what the IKEA brand is. And thats why it is so powerful. Thats why brands are so valuable because they are in our heads. They worm their ways into the minds of millions, billions of people, and thats what accounts for their value. The really interesting thing which people forget is that when we talk about brands being in the minds of people, those people are not just consumers. They are also employees. So brands are very powerful in the external marketplace, but theyre also incredibly powerful inside the organization. Everybody in IKEA knows exactly what theyre trying to achieve. The brand is built into them to such an extent that if you work in IKEA, your focus on affordable design means that you would never dream of flying business class. Theres no rule that says you cant fly business class, but you just wouldnt dream of it because thats not the brand of IKEA, the brand that, as an employee, you belong to. The founder, Ingvar Kamprad really looks after that brand, whenever he flies to a country to inspect some of their stores, he will always take the airport coach, and always stays in a cheap hotel, hes the original personification of the brand and still going strong. Why do we still fall for brands? Brands give us meaning and belonging, which are deep human needs. Apple for example, compared with other smartphones or other computers, has an additional meaning to do with the importance of design and the need for machines to think about human beings and to behave in human-like ways. One of the stories about Apple that really matters to me is that Steve Jobs was very influenced by his father, who made furniture. His father used to say that its really important to design the back of a sideboard or a cupboard because even though its up against the wall and nobody will see it, its a mark of the integrity of the thing that youre making, an effort of your integrity. Apple, much more than its competitors, thinks deeply about the integrity of its products. Its all of that meaning that I get from Apple. Theres also a sense of belonging to like-minded Apple users and fans. Theres that social sense, we live in an age of the smartphone culture era, an age of sharing, and brands give us things that we can share with others. When I teach every year, I get a new group of students every September, and they come from every corner of the planet. But within about 20 minutes, they are relating to each other through the medium of the brands that they like and share because they know them, because brands are so universal or a cultural currency that bring people together. Thats why we cant help falling for meaning and belonging. What are the dos and the donts in branding? Its important to appeal to both sides of us as human beings, the rational side, and the intuitive and emotional side. The two really big things on the rational side are to keep being useful, to give people something that they want and need, and to create products with real integrity. Also to stay slightly ahead, giving people new things that maybe theyre only just beginning to discover that they need. That would be the secret of a brand like TESLA, which is a very small car company that is more valuable than many of the very big car companies because of its brand. The other half of it is the intuitive part, which is to make sure that you are in tune with your customers and your employees, share values with them, and lead a little bit in terms of those values and those emotions. A brand that isnt constantly coming up with fresh things both for consumers and employees will gradually die, but its also important to stay true to yourself. Keep refreshing, but dont start lying, dont be false to yourself, dont do things that arent in your heritage. People will see through untruthful, inauthentic brands very quickly. Three things to go for: something big, something simple, and something true. Connect with Robert on Twitter at @robertjones2.

Does The World Cup Affect Workplace Productivity
Does The World Cup Affect Workplace Productivity Do you love watching the World Cup? Do you watch it during work? When I worked as a corporate consultant back in 2010, streaming video of the World Cup games was actually banned at our company since it was horribly affecting our Internet network. It made me wonder how many people at my work were actually watching the World Cup rather than working. I also wondered whether it was influencing productivity since it seemed like no one was really working around me. I noticed a few people watching the game and some cheers coming from the office next to mine. I even took part in the festivities by taking a rather long lunch to watch one of the games with co-workers (it was a team building event of course). In the past, I never even knew when the World Cup was on. This year, there was so much more hype and excitement about the World Cup games! I think this is mainly due to the awesome wins and stories from the United States team. The U.S.âs 2-1 loss to Ghana in the World Cupâs round of 16 was the most watched menâs soccer match in American history, with 19.4 million viewers (14.9 million on ABC and 4.5 million on Spanish language Univision). My husband and I watched most of the games and really enjoyed them. We even talk about how we wish we would have played soccer when we were younger and how our kids will be soccer superstars and play in the World Cup someday (or future Olympians instead?) Due to the time difference, games are played when most Americans are at work. The final game is today between the Netherlands and Spain. (Go Spain!) The Stats The News and World Report estimated The World Cup will likely cost American companies 10 minutes of productivity a day for 21 days. That comes to about $121.7 million in lost productivity in the US. Even though this number is pretty shocking, Americans probably watch the World Cup less than any other country. In Italy, when workers were told that they couldnât watch the game, they went on strike a half hour before the game. Did you know that Brazil basically shuts down everything when their team plays? No work, school, flights or even elective surgeries so that everyone can be in front of the TV. Have you noticed decreased productivity at work by you or your co-workers? Do you think this is ok because the World Cup only comes around every four years?
